Kids don't roam free anymore. Even in safe middle class suburban neighborhoods where the only traffic is from residents. People always want to blame over-protective parents for it, but in my experience the bigger problem is schedules. Once kids are of school age, most have two working parents and activities to schedule around. Summer just isn't the same for kids with working parents.
When I was a kid, summer vacation meant sleeping in, eating breakfast in front of the TV, then walking or riding over to my friends' houses to get something going. Most days, that started with a lot of "What do you want to do? I don't know, what do you want to do. I don't know..." but then we'd end up on an adventure or gathering neighborhood kids together for a game. Baseball was tough because you had to drive to a ball field, so we played wiffle ball, football, street hockey, soccer, and basketball.
As an adult, baseball remains difficult. Around here, we have popular adult leagues for soccer and hockey and basketball, but not for baseball. Even softball leagues seem to be on the decline.
