You don't need a Roku subscription to use the device, but you do need a Roku account to "activate" the device. If you don't have a Roku account, it will guide you through creating one when you first connect it. I think it will ask you for CC info to buy content from their app. It did with me, years ago when I created my account, but you could skip entering a CC if you didn't intend to buy from them.
Roku provides a curated mix of free and pay-to-purchase movie and TV content in their app called The Roku Channel. They also have a free Live TV app that simulcasts a bunch of cable channels. Otherwise, the content comes from 3rd party apps like Netflix, Hulu, Tubi, Peacock, etc. Some of them require subscriptions and some don't. But you shouldn't have to subscribe to anything more than you have now. For the subscriptions you already have, just download their app on Roku and sign into your account.
