There were not a lot of anything but whites on any TV shows and advertising in the 60s. No fault of the show, just the way Hollywood wrote them. Surry County is around 3% African American so it is not the same demographic of the stereotypical Southern community.
Let me guess, you travelled around the South selling, Bibles, magazine subscriptions, home cleaning products, or prosthelytizing for the Church of Jesus of Latter Day Saints.
Hopefully you experienced Krispy Kreme, Old Salem, toured Reynolda House, got free cigarettes while touring RJR and Lorillard, free beers at Strohs, hiked Pilot Mountain and Hanging Rock. As much as I love the AGS, Mt Airy is not on my bucket list.
