The issues you raise have largely been settled by statute. Even those with carry permits, for example, can Not do so in many places.

Here in California, my understanding (subject to a pro input) is that I CAN carry on my property, but not display. Must be concealed. And I need no special paperwork or permission to do so.
If I owned acres / rural? I'd be tempted to do so.

The mirror to 'things have changed' is that PEOPLE have not. Still reactive. Still can be aggressive with no reason.
Just look at some of those posted driving videos.....
