World Bathing Day

As little kids, we took baths. But as elementary school went on, we took showers instead of baths.

During move-in, in September 1990, my friend Tuyet lived at UC Santa Cruz's Merrill residential college (above). When she took a tour of my dorm, at adjacent Crown College, her eyes lit up. You see, my dorm, unlike most, actually had a bathtub. And Tuyet apparently loved taking baths.

Since Tuyet's home was in L.A., she couldn't go back, to fetch her bath products. So she grabbed me, went into Santa Cruz, and bought some bubble bath.

Our friends absolutely loved going to hot tub & sauna spas, such as Santa Cruz's Well Within Spa. Since Tuyet actually preferred the sauna over a hot tub, she liked to book Well Within's so-called "onsen room (above)," which had a small tub without jets. Tuyet was petite, so she was able to sit side-by-side with me, in that small tub. That said, she preferred to sit with her legs over and perpendicular to mine. It was perfectly fine, to bring your own bubble bath, and make a mess.

In 1994, friends would go to East Asian countries, where they absolutely loved spas. They loved to bathe in onsen and sento. So when they came back to the States, they gathered everyone, and went to other towns, to check out spas.

Most of my friends graduated from college in 1995. After that, full-time jobs eliminated all those pockets of free time. In order to relax and get rejuvenated, we doubled down, on finding different bathing spots. There was something about bathing outdoors, which felt extra special.

Around 2000, we finally got to try mud baths. You learn the hard way, that going in with a bathing suit will ruin the latter.

A good facility provides racks, for you to hang your swimwear, while you get all muddy. Let the mud get caked up on your skin. And then, it's really fun, to wash it off.

For decades, my friends frowned at high-end audio's lack of marketing skill. My friends wondered why high-end audio didn't partner with pop culture brands, such as Sanrio.

LUSH have a My Melody bath bomb. C'mon man, why can't high-end audio be that fun?

All of these things lead to June 27, which is World Bathing Day. We'll get back to our "everything shower" posts, but for now, enjoy a good bath, be it simple or fancy, indoor or outdoor, alone or with others.
