I worked for a major oil company. Mom and pop operations are boom or bust. They get rich or go bankrupt. Majors play the percentages. Some wells will produce modestly, some like gang busters and some nothing. Overall, they are profitable. They also take less chances. They employ geophysisists to interpret seismic maps, geologists, and petrophysical engineers to study and help them make good decisions. They don't just drill a hole in the ground and hope.
