Inmate Central, where civil and family-friendly discourse about off-audio topics (other than religion and politics) is welcome.

I would basically agree, and the fact Ampex was founded by another Russian guy has nothing to do wiith that

Everyone knows about Sikorsky and Zvorykin, but Aleksandr Matveevich Poniatov (the first three letters in the company name) has crazy long list of accomplishments in the field of audio and video recording, he was a true pioneer, a world figure.

I also have several other Ampex models, some old 350 and 440, which I also like - they are simple yet incredibly tough and well behaved. Also the ATR-800, their last audio tape model, produced together with Teac. A very nice machine that one, too.

Lyrec is VERY different... it is unique in the way it has done things - I have two of their machines: Frida and Fred. They are the size of a briefcase, but both are unusual... and very, very hard to find, even in Europe. Fred is an editing deck, with just two reel motors, no capstan, very light and portable, but it will play 12" reels at 15ips.

Frida is a very serious effort, a modern machine that does many things very well in a tiny package.

In some ways Ampex is like an American muscle car, with Studer one of those European sports sedans.
