That would be a good guess

Right now it is a pair of Rex 2 monoblocks.

Soon its output tubes to be replaced with the new secret weapon - I doubt anyone here knows that tube yet. :)

Actually, it is very easy to work with those sources - there are, I think, 16 of them, some are not visible in the picture. There is quite a bit of cabling, of course, and there are four preamps total. One is the real preamps, the the other three are used as just source selectors.

So it is not hard to select the source you want to hear... the problem happens when you would like to record the source X on a tape deck Y, or make a dub from the deck A to a deck B. In that case you have to run some external cabling. But most of those connectors are easily accessible, with some exceptions. There is, of course, a rats nest behind the main preamp.

In addition to the standard stuff such as the TT, decks, CD, there is also the streamer with a REX 3 tube DAC.

There are two sides to music selection - I don't think I am unique in that regard. One is for my soul - and it is usually classical, plus some classical jazz. The other one is purely for sound, and there the tape decks rule the day.

Most of them don't play through their internal circuits. I take the signals from their playback heads and use my external preamps to amplify and condition the signal - such approach is very common today. I have seven such tape head preamps - they are basically modified phono stages.

Pre-recorded tapes are the best quality sound source today, so I have a reasonably good collection. Unfortunately, most such releases are jazz, rock and pop, but the quality of some tapes blows your mind away. These are mostly the 1/4" 15ips 2 track tapes, with some 30ips, and there are even some 1/2" tapes. Problem with such tapes is their high cost, so my inventory is not as large as I would like it to be. How many tapes can an average guy buy at the current up to $450 a pop prices?
