On outdoor fixtures

I had to deal with one last weekend. There is a 4-light fixture by our front door - it came with the house, so it must be 36yo.

Only one socket worked, no matter how hard I tried. So I decided to clean the oxidation, sprayed it liberally with DeOxit. No effect, so I knew it was the time to bite the bullet.

It is a heavy mama fixture, with thick "crystal" sides... but with my wife providing physical support I removed it.

I took the first socket/tube assembly out and... it was full of dirt. So full you could not see even the bottom contact.

It is amazing what 36 years of dust accumulation will do...

Long story short, with some scraping and then blowing with compressed air, then some steel wool, I got them all working.

The were all full of it.

The fixture has a door, but apparently enough dust flies through the air, so it you leave a socket empty, it will eagerly gobble up the dust.
