Music and broccoli

As I (may) have mentioned, I am working my way alphabetically thru my music collection,
listening to every disc I have. Yes, every one. Even Glen Miller.

Right now, I am listening to Mingus Ah Um, which was recorded in 1959. It is highly
regarded by the jazz cognoscenti and has won awards. I'm trying to understand why
it won awards.

Listening to this recording is like eating broccoli. You have to listen to suchlike recordings
(and eat broccoli) every 10 or 15 years in order to have greater (far greater) appreciation
of recordings such as Count Basie on Decca (and high quality ice cream).

Mingus and his band seem to be playing for themselves as I think only a trained musician
can understand what's being played. I am not a trained musician and do not understand
what they're playing. It's fine for musicians to play for themselves, but it's unreasonable
to expect non-musicians to appreciate or understand what they are doing.

Lack of skill dictates economy of style. - Joey Ramone
