Ella Fitz Fest

I have been listening to my jazz collection alphabetically and the other
day Ella Fitzgerald's turn came around. So far, I have listened to the
following of her recordings and my rating and comments for each are included:

Pure Ella - A++: Ella with just Ellis Larkins on piano in the early 50s.

Ella Returns to Berlin - A: I think she was having a slightly "off" night.

Ella in Rome - A++: A live performance I wish I could have attended

Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie - A: many critics think this is her best studio album aside from the songbooks.

Let No Man Write My Epitaph - A.

Fine and Mellow - A++: She's in full-on jazz singer mode with a truly
all star accompanying cast. AND!!! She and Clark Terry trade some scatting!

I've got a lot more of her recordings to get to yet.

None of these recordings is anything less than wonderful and I can easily
commend every one of them to you. Even her "lesser" recordings easily
surpass the best made by most other female singers of her era, and indeed
of any era. She is an outlier in terms of talent and she just loved to
sing. Listen and be awestricken.

Lack of skill dictates economy of style. - Joey Ramone
