They were never less than a quartet and the main two founders would still be near the top of anyone's "best of"
list on their respective instruments (and as COMPOSERS) had the band never existed.
AAMOF IF one were to factor composing into the mix (regarding influential quintets, et al), WR
are way out in front from many other bands that used standards and outside tunes to create their art.
Rick's example below are an exception, but most of the pre 70's bands fit the mode.
Any bands with WS and JZ also being an exception.
