Home High Efficiency Speaker Asylum

Need speakers that can rock with just one watt? You found da place.

HSU vs LABhorn....

I wanted to build a sub that would go low,be efficient, and produce high spl. I've never been too wild about bass reflexs, don't like the idea of unloading below resonance,(1812 Overture, etc).I had read various places that horns don't work as well in small rooms,so I decided to go with a sealed box.I had played around with the HSU ASW1202(car subwoofer)and thought it was pretty good, but not as efficient as I was looking for.If one is good, eight should be much better! 9 db more efficient,1/8 the excursion for less distortion, and 8 times the power handling.Less power compression. Rather than build a huge box that would be impossible to move,I built eight 1.8 cu ft(internal volume) cabinets that would allow more flexability in placement, and be much easier to move.(50 lbs each)I stacked 4 in each corner, wired series parallel(3.5 ohms)and powered with 500 watts per channel. I'm not sure what my amp would do with a lower Z,and I don't want to find out the hard way!:)

As expected, most excellent results! Loud and clean, tight solid bass with plenty of punch,no problem keeping up with the VOTs,and able to shake everything in the house that isn't nailed down, and a few things that are!(walls, floor, etc.)

I was perfectly happy with this setup, and the story could have ended here, but all the while a little voice in my head was saying "it's not a horn! You really want a horn, don't you?"

Meanwhile,I had been reading about the LABhorn, and reading about how much better a horn is,so I decided to go ahead and build one to see how well it would work. I have not been dissapointed!!! Quite the opposite,it is even more efficient,6 db by my meter, but more like 10 db subjectively.Goes down to 30 hz before it drops like a rock, but has even more punch,(its true, you can't beat a horn for transients),and the output is unbelievable! The 8 HSUs don't have a chance against this thing. If you have the room,a horn is the way to go!
