Hi John!Here's the point.
You started this thread by saying that you were amazed with the performance of these Eminence woofers in a bass-reflex box. My suggestion is that you might consider keeping them that way. For one thing, the boxes are much smaller. And for another, your low frequency extension will be deeper, at the expense of reduced SPL.
I have some large horns in my home. They very large like the LAB horn, and I joke that a person could live inside these things because they're the size of a small apartment. They sound great and they're very impressive. So I'm not opposed to such things, but I am realistic about their strengths and weaknesses.
I love horns, and I love the dynamic range they offer. But I also know that basshorns are necessarily bulky, so they're difficult to transport and service. Assembly is labor-intensive so they're expensive from a manpower perspective. Beyond this, there are some technical details that merit some discussion. Even though the box is very large, acoustically it is quite small. And because of this, to get real 20-30Hz extension one has to supply 10X to 100X power in this region. That means the horn isn't doing squat at the lowest bass frequencies.
Personally, I'd rather run a smaller basshorn and cover the bottom octave with a direct radiator. That's what you're doing anyway because even this large basshorn is much too small to load the diaphragm at low frequencies. Ah, what the hell. Get out the equalizer and delay units. Bump up the power 20dB, which is 100X. That'll fix it.
That's the point.
Wayne
