Re: AL's Horn Project

Hi! Glad you liked the A7's...FWIW,here is some info on my speakers:
416-8a,808-8a,800 hz altec crossover, the 511b's were sprayed with 2 cans of undercoating, the webs were cut and filled with silicone.(big improvement, not so sure about the undercoating).

The horn flares on the 825's were filled with 2-3 inches of cement. The stock cabinets vibrate a lot.(5/8" plywood) Instead of closing off the back of the flares,as recommended by Jim Dickenson,www.soundpractices.com,I figured the extra space(about.8 cu ft)could be better used to add additional bracing to the cabinet. Also the volume of the 511b,(.4 cu ft)was added to the amount of bracing without having to change the port size . I won't be able to put the horns back inside the cabinets now,but I like the way they look on top better anyway.

The 515's and 902's should just fine, maybe better,I don't have much experience with them, but others have commented on them.

Your room size is very close to mine,(13.5x16.5x8)not ideal for this kind of speaker, but they still work just fine.I thought mine sounded better at the show than they do at home.

The bass response isn't bad,but I recently added a LABhorn as a subwoofer.Big improvement,especially for home theater.

I have been thinking about experimenting with other horns or cabinets,my big ole lathe has been sitting unused for far too long.

The Edgar style tractrix horns are probably as good as anything for the mid's and hf.I think some big round horns ala Sierra Brooks or Aventgarde would look really cool for the bass.

I don't know if this info has been of any use,but I,(and it looks like quite a few other people)are interested in this sort of project,so keep us posted on your progress.Good Luck!
