OK, that is subjective.I think by hifi standards, high efficiency would be 96db 1w1m and beyond. Talk to the horned up lads here, that just won't cut it, you need to get near LaScala (103 db 1w1m) and beyond....
as for a $500 pair of quality high efficiency speakers, go used:
Klipsch Quartet
Klipsch Forte
Klipsch Forte 2
Klipsch LaScala (a bit beat up cosmetically though)
Klipsch CF2
Klipsch KLF 10
Klipsch KSF 10.5those are in the neighborhood, and that will get you in this hood. That was a beginning point for alot of the graybeards here (ggg*). Yep, good performance from all of the above, especially considering the price used.
