Basically, it's about the combined sound with the amplifier. I run Audio Note speakers which depending on the model and whether they are placed in corners run 90-98dB. But the 90dB Audio Note K/Spe I reviewed I ran with 8 watts per channel 2a3 amps (they recommend a minimum of 7 watts) so it's high efficiency but not super high sensitivity.
And the forum title is high efficiency, not high sensitivity. So technically, the 82dB sensitive LS-3/5a counts - it can be driven well on 8 watts per channel (in fact they can only take 50 watts maximum) so they were often run with the 10 watt Sugden class A amp back in the 70s.
I currently run Audio Note E/SPx AlNiCo Hemp speakers which are claimed to be 95dB sensitive - I run both 8 watt Empress Silver 2a3 amps and 250 Watt (430 into 4ohms) Wyred4Sound Amps - 1 watt of the 8 watts is more than enough. Let alone the class D amps.
One reason I always recommend HE speakers is that you can buy amplifiers based on your preferred sound quality and not be forced to buy amplifiers based on sound quantity.
It doesn't matter what other people say about this either - if the 3.5-watt amp sounds good on your speakers with your music in your room then the efficiency/sensitivity number doesn't mean squat.
I am contemplating trading my Empress Silver 2a3 Monoblocks (8 watts) for the Audio Note Jinro (18 watts - copper wired version of the unobtanium Ongaku) not because of the added power but because I like the fuller more robust sound quality (depth, drive, and body).
