Quite right, Fred. It's not exactly state of the art. The phase plug isn't a phase plug, it's a pole piece extension. Removing the dust cap allows a simpler crossover by reducing the high frequency extension of the woofer. You wouldn't want to leave it looking like that, so you add the extension to make it look better, and call it a phase plug because you know most of your customer base doesn't know what a phase plug is. Of course even using the term crossover is a euphemism, as all they have is a 1st order high pass filter. And then they have the gall to offer a $100 cap 'upgrade' that costs more than the woofer, and $4 resistors for $11 that suck off power like a hungry vampire, but hey, never give a sucker an even break.
The original B102, and for that matter all Eminence designs that existed prior to 2004, was redesigned when DuPont stopped selling Kapton voice coil formers and Eminence had to switch to a different supplier. While they were at it they made some other changes, mainly to increase the low frequency capability, which also had the effect of reducing the high frequency extension.
