I've always considered the term 'reactance annulling' as a three dollar word applied to a ten cent concept. As to what it is, when the combination of the driver Mms and the horn Mms result in the driver's de facto resonant frequency coming in lower than the horn Fc there's a loss of sensitivity in the region just above Fc. To raise the de facto driver resonant frequency up to where it needs to be you make the rear chamber smaller. Rocket science it isn't. This also points out why you get the best results using a driver that has Fs higher, sometimes considerably higher, than the horn Fc.
