If anything I'd say what killed it off is people buying with their eyes. The slot tweeter is a variation of the classic diffraction horn, and like the diffraction horn the uninformed masses don't understand why horizontal dispersion is wider when the slot is vertical. Remember the EV 8HD and T35A? They went away for the same reason. Not being a slave to fashion I still use diffraction horns in a number of my designs.
