I went from 1st order passive to 4th order (analogue) active on my speakers; it took me ages to find the balance I wanted, but once you're there, it sounds better IMHO.
Quality of the active crossover circuitry is crucial. Just like a lousy preamp would be, a "bad" active crossover will be a terrible bottleneck.

I found happiness with the K231 from Sublime Acoustic, if you wanna stay analogue.
