Well, it seems that the cause for the dramatic change in sound is not only the bass horn being raised from the floor but also, the change in the way its output interacts with the mid horn above; since the latter essentially keeps the same exact position in space and the bass horn is getting closer to it / closer to the listener's ears. it may just be by a very small margin but I've noticed half an inch can make a tremendous difference.
