RE: Subwoofer for Klipschron AK6

IDEALLY horn subs are the way to go. BUT we all have to compromise on real estate at some point - I assume your friend doesn't have a dedicated listening room the size of an automobile showroom (?)
If that is indeed the case, I would say using regular direct radiating subs is a viable option - there are some things to consider; it WILL be a compromise and it WON'T be easy to have a seamless blend but it can be done reasonably (I'm doing it). Using TWO subs or more helps (I would say it is mandatory); choosing subs that are articulated and musical (sealed probably helps) is mandatory as well, and keeping in mind they will reach their limits far before the Klipschorns is important - but depending on room size and maximum preferred SPL this may or may not be an issue.
In my system I can somewhat hear the subs lagging behind the bass horns (non audiophile ears don't hear it) muddying the bass a little; but I still prefer the sound WITh the subs - but I don't use Klipschorns, my bass horns don't produce ANY low bass so there's that. Klipschorns depend heavily on the room they are in for their low bass output so it's hard to tell if your friend actually NEEDS subs or if he misses the slightly boomy "oomph" sound generally associated with bass. Personal preferences may deviate from ideal, correct response. It's all fine as well - enjoying is the goal.

All that being said, I would strongly insist that your friend chooses a company allowing home trial before any purchase, as results in this specific situation are really hard to predict.
