Without having heard the various versions myself, I would expect the III and IV to be much smoother and listenable than the first and second versions. Better drivers, and better crossovers.
Not laidback speakers by any stretch according to reviews but should be worlds apart nonetheless.
The bigger motor on the latest woofer probably helps it match the midrange driver better, resulting in a more balanced, less shouty sound, altho that is just my wild guess.
