It's a technical definition. A line array is a group of drivers or separate speakers that form a line source. A line source doesn't necessarily use multiple drivers; a tall planar can be a line source. I remember seeing a twelve foot or so high electrostatic in Speaker Builder magazine back in the '90s. A low frequency line source is almost impossible to realize, due to the size requirement. At even 100Hz the minimum three wavelength height is 33 feet.
