That's my experience of Heritage speakers like the K-horn (extensive listening to a friend's here in New Zealand as he has modified horns, drivers, crossovers) and Forte. And they are that rare thing in audio - truly good value.
They represent access to high end playback that has made legions of fans invest in tweaking their past idiosyncrasies into more a manageable and bearable presentation. But now many of these after-market mods have been officially recognised and incorporated (in some form or BN other) into the most recent designs.
The mistake some make as they reach 'up' financially to afford this or that model, is not using ancillary equipment of sufficient quality (despite price). At first it's hard to accept that you actually can have playback sounds of this quality in your home. Like that amazingly beautiful date who is genuinely interested in you and wants your number. You can't quite believe it and are suspicious about whether you're really hearing what you're hearing - surely something must be wrong? Surely you can sabotage the sound somehow and get back to the natural order of things, of hifi reproduction? They make you feel uncomfortable in your skin, at first, because they sound so real. Secretly, you can't believe your luck. Use inadequate partnering gear, and they will disappoint. But that's not they're inherent quality, I've found. Stick on some NOS triodes or meshplates with excellent iron and they *will* blow you away.
In other words, don't cheap out on them! If you can't spend the dough, go DIY, used and super esoteric. You will probably find yourself deeply in love with them. If you need to, change your amps.
I'm saving to have a pair of C IVs in the house.
