RE: Beautiful system you have...

Hi, Mats

Unfortunately I am better at building things then using computers. I went to Dr.Bruce Edgars home several years ago to ask his advice on the midbass horn design I had in mind. In about 2 minutes with pencil and paper he went through some horn formulas and said "57hz". He drew up some rough measurements, and off I went. Dr. Bruce is one amazing, intelligent person. The midbass horn mouth is 32"wide ( so it could fit through the door ) 44"tall and 45" deep. There are 2 Altec 515b's with 10.25" square throats. The throats have a slight taper to avoid any parallel sides. There is also a 16" long wedge between the 2 throats. This horn ( in my room ) measures down to 57hz. flat and then drops like a rock, then crossed over at 450 hz. on top. I used 2 drivers per horn to make sure I had at least 106 db efficiency so I did not have to pad down ( total waste of power IMHO ) the field coil drivers. The room was gutted by me and built for audio. Because I live on the service road of the BQE it is noisy so... Between the studs was painted with 3 coats of auto soundproofing, loaded vinyl was put over that. I then used 4"shredded cotton insulation between the studs (16" on center in NYC). Next, I put strips of loaded vinyl on the face of all the studs and screwed down 3/4" plywood all around the room. The front of the house was given 3 layers of sheetrock with green glue between each layer. The other walls and ceiling got 2 layers of sheetrock with green glue in between. This house was built in 1899 and uses full dimension wood ( 2" x 4" studs is the actual size ). All the floor boards were screwed down uxing 2 1/2" screws, then 3/4" plywood was glued and screwed down on top of that. The 3/4" brizilian cherry finished floor was put down with soundproofing glue made by Sika and carefully tacked down. As you can see, considerable effort was put into this 16' x 22+' x 10' high room. The end result was well woth it.

This system sounds live, clear, clean, great imaging, has effortless power which very few prople have experienced outside of a live music event. I have gone to almost all the audio shows in the U.S. since 2000 and have not heard anyting I would trade my speakers for. Sorry for the long post but I feel an explanation was necessary. Nedless to say, my search for the "perfect" speaker is over.
