What Briggs might have thought that it did and what it actually did weren't necessarily the same thing. That was still long before how ports functioned was widely understood, and why midrange and high frequency radiation from ports isn't a concern when the cabinet is properly damped. Note that the example was not. That's interesting, as the circular column was seriously over damped, to the extent that the vents were probably rendered non-functional. But here again this was long before the effect of damping on Qa was known, and for that matter Qa was yet to be defined.
