RE: IME 5th and 6th order reflex bass speakers have less overhang than unassisted boxes

All things being equal, the faster the roll off, the greater the overhang. Of course even a second order box can sound boomy if it is designed with a high Q, a famous example being the LS3/5A.

I suppose if the F3 is low enough so it is rarely if ever reached the over hang affect can be avoided but that would be a really low F3 with a large box or with a lot of electronic equalization and thus lots more power.
