The ones I've heard were both extended and exhibited nice dispersion. The problem lay directly beneath.
Locanthi chose to run 5" midrange drivers waaaaayyy (a good octave or so) past their ability to deliver consistent directivity. The result was a sonic equivalent of an hourglass in terms of perceived image width. Wide and consistent at the top and bottom but pinched in the middle. The clamped down midrange was immediately crossed over to a tweeter sitting in the middle of its sweet spot.
It wouldn't have been so noticeable if the tweeter shared the same narrowed perspective.
