you might be able to help the situation somewhat by using active equalization. But I agree with you in that this particular design might not be worth the trouble. In my experience, Seismic type of floor firing subs is optimal and offers the best compromise between size, construction effort and performance. With Seismic type of sub we were able to achieve a fairly linear output down to 35 Hz.
