I use the DEQX HDP-3 DSP with my three way all horn DIY system. I like the results it gives very much. Even though I have programmed the DEQX myself a number of times with useful results when I read online that the DEQX was never designed to be a consumer product, and that professionals who programmed it for recording studios, night clubs, etc. got much better results I decided to explore that.
A phone call with the folks with DEQX in Australia revealed that there was a service called DEQXpert available for a fee. I engaged the services of a DEQXpert, Larry Owens, whose company is called KRC and is located in Colorado. By allowing Larry to control my PC which was attached to my DEQX and and through it to my stereo at the same time we were sharing a Skype connection I could watch everything he was doing to reprogram the DEQX. He was amazingly fast. Just one brief example is that he explored various crossover roll off slopes from 6 dB/octave to 144 dB/octave by examining frequency response characteristics, phase relationships between drivers, etc. for each slope. He moved through the possibilities so rapidly that If I looked away for even a minute I would miss much. Since I was paying him by the hour I never complained about this.
The final results he achieved delighted and amazed me. I had been happy enough with the DIY horn system that I had enjoyed listening to it for ten years, but now it was at least an order of magnitude better. This is after a history of quickly tiring of Acoustat 2+2s, Magnepans, Dynaudio d'Appolito 3 way towers, etc. The horns sound so much better that I have been inviting old friends who have heard them before to come give them another listen.
I dream of an America where a chicken can cross the road without having it's motives questioned.
