I will echo a previous posters recommendations----do not give up on horns !!!! as you will probably be disappointed.
You can easily get a pair of jbl 2441's on ebay for a modest cost then look on www.diyaudiogroup.com and get an appropriate horn. Then buy a pair of good fostex horn tweeters add a 6db crossover ala Bruce Edgars and put one or a pair per channel of Beyma 12" drives below. For not much work you can build a great pair of speakers that will be much better and cheaper then almost anything out there. Mount the drivers physically as close as possible to one another and the system will sound great at a fairly short listening distance.
