RE: Help With Selecting the Proper Subwoofers to Use With Sachikos

Since Bill F. mentioned me I will go ahead and chime in. I use Bill's HT Tubas driven by Dayton Audio RSS390HF-4 15" Reference HF Subwoofer 4 Ohm. At a nominal 160 Hz the HT Tubas are crossed over to Oris 150 horns driven by AER MD-3s. At 7 kHz the Oris horn/AER combo is crossed over to Fostex t900a bullet tweeters. All crossover slopes are 96 dB/octave.

For several years I used the Oris and Fostex combination with the bass bins of a pair of Klipschorns providing the bass. The Khorn bass horns were a good match for the Oris wide range and Fostex tweeters, but I was really bothered by the lack of deep bass response from the Khorns. For the previous twenty years I had been accustomed to true 20 Hz extension.

What I wanted was a horn subwoofer that would match the good qualities of the K-horns, especially the dynamics and well controlled, clean, overhang free bass, but which could provide relatively flat response down to or near 20 Hz. I researched the subject of horn subwoofer designs exhaustively. About 2005 or so I decided that Bill's HT Tubas provided a good possibility of meeting my objectives so I bought the plans from him. I haven't beewn dissappointed.

The HT Tubas with the abovementioned 15" Dayton drivers provided the sort of crisp, clean very exciting dynamic horn bass I was looking for. The theoretical sensitivity of the HT Tuba and Dayton driver combination was about 105 dB/1 watt/1 meter. I sacrificed about 8 dB of that sensitivity in order to be able to do subtractive only equalization of the bass. My subwoofer amp outputs a continuous 500 w/ch into 4 ohms so a sensitivity of about 97 dB/1 watt/1 meter still meets my modest needs. Using a DEQX HDP-3 DSP equalizer and only subtractive equalization (no boosts) I was able to achieve an in room at the listening position frequency response of 19 Hz to 160 Hz +or- 4 dB.

I have been very happy with my DIY horn system for the last eight years. That says much. For thirty-five years before the HT Tuba/Oris horn/Fostex bullet tweeter system I changed speakers like a fashion model changes clothes.

The only real downside of the HT Tubas is that some would find them to be a bit large. Mine are 24" wide and occupy 18 cubic ft. of volume. Fortunately my room is fairly large and my wife is very accepting of big speakers.

I dream of an America where a chicken can cross the road without having it's motives questioned.
