Home High Efficiency Speaker Asylum

Need speakers that can rock with just one watt? You found da place.

RE: ?

Don't use the series xover described by Tre with a Class D amp. I know for a fact some of them at some point will send some nasty DC to the speakers. We lost 4 drivers at our party before we figured it was the amp and went back to the Pass and Transcendent stuff and all was well. We did not realize it was the xover causing the problem. We thought the amp was bad. It was a very nice DIY but I do not remember the board it used.

Henry discovered when he got home the amp was fine and he hooked it up to his series xover and BAM two more drivers gone! He then checked a couple other Class D amps he had (I think) and discovered for a fact the amps did not appreciate the series xover at all. The Heil was undamaged in each case but the 126's had stuck cones! Henry said the amp spit out 21 volts at the speakers as soon as he hooked the series xover up and started playing it.

So far there have been no issues with this xover and my speakers and the Heils. There have been no meltdowns, not even when the 126's were being fried, although that happened instantly when the amp spit out the DC and opened the VC. We assumed the 126 had acted somewhat like a fuse for the Heil. I can not give any advice about any other use of the series xover, slope, or the Heils with anything except my application. Keep in mind, if diaphragms start melting and 126's start frying I have to take care of it. If you build something based on my use of Heils, slope, xover type and so forth and it is not EXACTLY what I provide to my folks, it's not my fault if things go sideways.....Gist of it is.....be careful with the series xover and Class D amps!

The first order series xover is certainly not a good choice for everything but if you can use it I think it is a better choice, even though I misunderstood it! Well, except for the "special" property of the way the point shifts with impedance changes.

Those are some of the older magnet structures........new ones are prettier. I have old ones like those. I like the "old school look".

24Db @ 1.2K is not bad advice at all. Many guys have no problem melting Heils.
