Compression drivers are typically "fried" either through excessive excursion (mechanical failure) or exceeding its power handling capability (thermal failure).
You can avoid the first by crossing to it at an appropriate frequency and by using a slope which is appropriate for that frequency for the desired SPL for that driver, and by not sending peaks which cause over-excursion.
You can avoid the second by not sending excessively compressed/limited/clipped waveforms to it at levels which exceed the ability of the driver to normally dissipate the heat, which would actually fry the voice coil.
