RE: 160hz lowthers.

I decided to post into this thread because my solution regarding what drivers and enclosure to use below a horn nominally crossed over at 160Hz are so drastically different from those suggested by other posters.

To begin with my horn covering 160Hz to 7kHz is an Oris 150 instead of an Azura horn. Also the wide range driver in the Oris horns is an AER MD3, but the MD3s replaced Lowther PM4a's that I was previously using in the Oris horns.

I think horns go best with horns so I originally tried using the bass bins of a pair of Klipschorns below 160Hz. This worked out quite well except for the fact that for decades I had been accustomed to solid 20Hz or lower bass, and I felt as though I were being badly abused to have to live with the lack of sub 35Hz bass the wimpy K-horns delivered.

The next solution I tried was a winner that I have been pleased with since trying it. Using a DEQX HDP-3 active crossover and time, phase, room, etc correction device I cross from a pair of Bill Fitzmaurice designed HT-Tuba 1/8 wave corner horn subwoofers to the Oris Horns. The crossobers are nominally 160Hz with both low and high pass slopes of 96 dB/octave. I sacrifice about 8dB of sensitivity in order to make the room correction equalization entirely subtractive instead of including boosts. This still gives me about 97 dB/2.83 volt/1m overall sensitivity for the subs. The sound is fantastic.

I dream of an America where a chicken can cross the road without having it's motives questioned.
