The Last Speaker Enclosure I'm going to Build

For this discussion I only want to address the correct number of drivers needed to span 20-20000Hz +/- 0 db, assuming that room for the enclosures will not be an issue. I do not want to talk about any specific speaker manufacturers because they can’t violate the rules of physics any more or less than any other manufacturer. Everybody knows that you can’t get a good sounding15KHz out of a woofer and you can’t get a good sounding 30Hz out of a tweeter. That’s just the laws of physic. The actual wavelengths of high frequencies do not change in length as fast as the wavelength of low frequencies. For example in going from 20Hz to 40Hz the wavelength has halved, but in going from 15020Hz to 15040Hz the wavelength hasn’t changed much at all. That’s just the laws of physic. Also the cone excursions needed for high frequencies is much less than that needed for low frequencies for a given listening level. These are rules that speaker manufacturers can not violate. That why I don’t want to include speaker manufacturers at this point. Because the wavelengths change so fast at the low end let’s just discuss the range from 20Hz to about 400Hz and how many drivers should be needed. Early I stated that in going from 20Hz to 40Hz you halved the wavelengths. Between that fact and the fact that cone excursion is going to be the hugest in this audio range maybe the first driver within 20-400Hz range should be 20-40Hz or 20-50Hz. If so the next question is do you go from 50Hz to 400Hz in just one more driver? Or break that range into 2-3 more drivers? This is still going to be a high cone excursion audio range and we want to cut down on as much IM distortion as possible without going crazy. Once we determine the correct number of drivers then we will move the discussion to the best way to keep these cone excursions down (Bass reflex, tapped horn, Isobaric - Dual Drivers, etc) for a given listening level.
