Does anyone remember the long-discontinued Radio Shack 400-1310? It has a similar aluminum conical point inside the horn, and I've heard rumors it was a Pioneer product. (You hear a lot of rumors though!) It was well regarded at one time - if you replaced the crappy electrolytic crossover cap. It had a tiny aluminum diaphragm (5/8 inch?), pretty fragile but smooth to past 35kHz and no nasty peaky resonances. Sensitivity was around 96dB IIRC.
I used them in an industrial application long ago and can confirm the smooth and extended highs - we measured them past 70kHz. Not having any interest in crossovers at 5kHz and above at the time, I never listened to music through one of these; now I wish I'd picked up a couple.
The only thing that compared (that we found in the late eighties) was the Altec 3000H, another phenolic diaphragm around 1" diameter; it was actually a microphone diaphragm and very fragile indeed - 3 or 4 watts would burn it out almost instantly.
