RE: Don't agree

Well, last night I took your words to task and ran back and forth between the Revel Salon 2 / Musical Fidelity 550K / Cary SLP-03 / Music Hall Maverick SACD system and my Zu Essence / Melody I2A3 / Samsung DVD-HD841 universal player system. The first recording I compared was the Zenph Glenn Gould "Bach: The Goldberg Variations".

I began on the Revel system listening to the first 3 tracks, then the same on the Essences. I was shocked to like the sound on the Essences better - the piano was more to life scale and the strikes had the live hammer striking patten plate harmonics. I returned to the Revel and noticed that they were firing straight down the room, so I adjusted them to toe in toward the listening seat and I raised my listening height with a couple of pillows ( the tweeters are very high on the Revels). This made a huge difference, the piano was now more realisticly sized and the piano striking was now very realistic. In addition, the lower piano registers were much better than the Essences.

I then repeated the same with the 3rd disc from the "Jazz At The Pawnshop" SACD collection. This piece has piano, sax, bass, drums, cymbles, and vibes in addition to audience noises. Here there was a clear favorite - the Revels. The drums were more realistic, you could hear the drum skin harmonics and it was clear when the sticks hit each other or when they sruck the rims, cymbols also were clearer. The lower registers of the piano and the bass were much more realistic sounding on the Revels. Both Revel and Essences were dynamic but the Revels clearly had more extention in both highs and lows.

In summary, yes both systems exibit good dynamics. But, no, the Essences although very pleasant and realistic, fall short of the Revels in a quick repetition sequence test such as this. Of course there are many other differences such as room size, furniture, power filters, etc. between the two rooms that also affect the comparisons.
