RE: alternative driver for klipschorn used as subwoofer?

Hey bobbyj,

I used the bass bin of a pair of K-horns under Oris 150 horns with AER MD3 drivers for several years. The timbre and tightness of the K-horn bass was an excellednt match for the very fast detailed Oris/AER combo, but having used JBL 18s in a reflex alignment of my own design flat to 25 Hz for nearly twenty years before that the lack of low bass from the K-horns made me feel I was being severely mistreated every time I listened.

After literally years of research my solution was a pair of Bill Fitzmaurtice designed HT Tuba corner horns driven by Dayton RSS390HF-4 15" Reference HF Subwoofers 4 Ohm. I am extremely well pleased with the Fitzmaurice horns. The bass is very solid to below 20Hz and is even better detailed, controlled and true to life than the K-horns. I cross the HT Tubas over at 160 Hz with a @96 dB/octave slope using a DEQX HDP-3. I don't know how well they would perform with a more typical 18 or 24 dB/8vo crossover slope set at a nominal 200 Hz, but I bet Bill does.

As I am using tyhem they are an exemplary match to the Oris 150s and Fostex T500a horn tweeters I use.

I dream of an America where a chicken can cross the road without having it's motives questioned.
