RE: Horn rig with conical mid horn - update

Hi Vatron,

Sorry about the late reply, but I have been away for the weekend. Thanks for the encouraging words! Yes, the horns are partly inspired by Wayne Parham's PI mid horns. I have also exchanged af few mails with Wayne where he explains some of his thoughts and considerations behinds his mid horns (thanks Wayne!). However, my horns differ from the PI mid horns in several respects. Mine were not meant to be placed in corners, so they had to be larger than the PI mid horns - especially considering that I initially wanted them to load down to 150 Hz. Another difference is that my horns only have a 60 degree horizontal dispersion whereas Wayne's horns are 90 x 40 horns. I used McBeans Horn Resp to make the simulations.

The dimensions of my horns are the following:

Throat size: 81 cm2 (9 x 9)
Mouth size: 2,760 cm2 (width=80 cm; hight=34.50 cm)
On axis length of horn: 61.50 cm

Everything is built in 22 mm (2.2 cm) MDF

(If you want to convert, then 1"= 2.54 cm).

I started out using fairly large drivers relative to the throat size (8" Fane Studio 8M). But when I decided to move the crossover points up for the mid horn, there was many reasons to try out smaller drivers, and hence smaller SD/throat ratio. Using no phase plug I think this is a sensible way to go (thanks to JLH for point this out.) In case you have further questions, then please go ahead!

Best regards
Peter
