RE: Soggy foil caps?

Greeting Ivan.

I've followed your recent cap and charged cap thots with interest.

A while back I tried cd soggy foil 12 uF (360 volts I think). Not so good as other pio caps we've used, but I didn't break them in. If you find you like soggy foil I have a bunch of 12 uF 360 VAC units at $6 each. If you find a huge improvement with breakin of your soggy foil caps, let me know so I can break mine in and then give them a try.

Yesterday ae and I tried the 9v charge on the caps for his GPA 604 speakers. The 4th order crossovers for these use metallized paper separated by film. Not sure of the film material. These are the best caps I've ever heard.

Disappointed with the charged cap result. Was hoping for more transparency without more clinicality. Did not achieve that.

First tried charged cap in woofer circuit cap to ground. Not as crazy as it sounds, because xover is at 1500. Got a brighter, harder sound . . . kind of what we were figthing to avoid in the 2 years it took to beat the 604 speakers into submission.

Next tried charged cap in tweeter circuit, in series with tweeter. Again, got a brighter, harder sound. Detail and space enhanced, but overall, not as easy to listen to as without charge.

The two locations where we tested the charged cap method already had series 12 uF caps to get 6 uF, so the experiment was easy to run. Used 9v cell, 3.1 meg resistor, and aligator clip leads. Experiment was over in 30 minutes.

If you don't like the result, remember to discharge the caps to ground when you are done. You'll hear a little pop through the speakers.

Perhaps with different caps in a different speaker system? Perhaps breakin is needed at the charged condition?

Another thought: It seems reasonable that one battery could be used for several caps. One would think the 2.2 meg resistors would be enough to keep the various caps from talking to one another. Didn't get this far with our experiment.
