Hornlover has got it. I would just add one thing. You say when you reversed both speakers' leads you realized the same result. Why would you reverse both cabinets. Changing both is the same as changing nothing.
Sounds to me (no pun) like someone has been inside the box and screwed up. Do the polarity check with a 9 volt battery( it's easier to see movement). If they move out of phase, one inward and one outward then reverse the leads on only one cabinet. If the woofers were wired incorrectly then it is quite possible the tweets are also out of phase. If you suspect this you will have to pull the woofers and check all internal wiring. I would anyway for piece of mind.
Even at very high frequencies, phasing is important. Not as dramatic as low end phase issues but definitely discernible and quite annoying to the ear as it plays havoc with imaging.
