RE: 25Hz or lower ...

Dear cids;

Coincidentially I have finally (after nearly making a second career out of them) finished up a pair of 18 cubic ft. Bill Fitzmaurice designed Home Theater Tuba corner horn subwoofers, each driven by a Dayton RSS390HF-4 15" Reference HF woofer with the pair powered by a high quality amp conservatively rated at 500 watts per channel into the 4 ohm load and easily able able to provide 3dB of dynamic headroom.

In my 12.5'X27.5'X8' room they definitely deliver 20Hz and below. In addition to hall ambience present on many many recordings there is much excellent music which can not be truly enjoyed without deep bass response. The only equalization I use with the HT Tubas is negative to pull down peaks, no boost at all.

I grew up hearing live music from birth. Though mine was a very working class family guitars, saxophone, trombone, voices and a marvelous old Behr Brothers piano(standard gear in old New Orleans and Miss. River jazz and blues clubs from Scott Joplin's day up through the 1930s) were part of our home furnishings. My first public live music experience, at age eight or nine, was a J.S. Bach organ recital at a large church on a pipe organ with 32Hz pipes. I've been a big fan of classical organ ever since.

A pair of subs that will give me at least a reasonable gut wrenching facsimile of a 16Hz stop is as essential as response above 5 kHz. Saint Saens Third Symphony is very possibly the most inspiring, glorious music in existence.

Since 1983 and up until fairly recently I had a pair of coffin sized reflex enclosures with an alignment of my own design using JBL 2245H 18" woofers. They served nicely. Then I changed my main speakers from 3 way Dynaudio d'Appolito towers to Oris 150 horns driven by AER MD3 drivers with Fostex T900A horn tweeters. My DIY subs couldn't keep up. I bought a pair of used Klipschorns, and used only the bass bins with the other horns. The wretched lack of low bass output from the K-horns was maddening.

Mr. Fitzmaurice's HT Tubas, thus far, have me singing their praises. The only reason I say, "thus far" is because I only got them playing yesterday, literally.

Tell your mama I said Hi,
Don
