Here is a test of a light cone woofer in a big horn, with and without a rear chamber. Note the distortion is lower with a rear cap.
Another issue is that if the horn is folded, it is much more likely the upper harmonics will affect the sound much more than the rear cap.
One other point, it is possible to build a tunned resonator in the rear cap to notch out any standing waves, above 200Hz or so.
This technique also works well in midrange horns, where th rearcap is more of an issue.
