The paper surrounds has a foam damper glued into the surround. The effects were backed up by tests, as shown in Olson's book.
Any duo-cone, as they were called, are terrific. Splinting hairs with the design of the surround is a minor design element compared to to rest of the system.
If you can afford it, it is one ( not was) of the best speakers ever made.
