Well they are not exactly hi efficiency, but you are right about the coherency thing. It is because the driver is co-axial and co-planer. The metal section has good phase.
It is also a bit like a Walsh driver. In fact it is the only other metal/paper cone I know of. If they had tripled the magnet, it would be less "veiled" However, despite the oval cone, the directivity is not as good as you might think.
Still it is a nice speaker. I would disconnect the tweeters and EQ +6dB from 8kHz up. Then the sound comes from only one point.
