Context and background

Here's more context:

1) This is not my primary system. It is my secondary "lifestyle" system for background music in the kitchen / living area of the house. As such, I have considerable latitude to make compromises that would not be considered for the "big" system.

2) The system should be satisfactory for music reproduction (very loaded statement, I know).

3) The equipment should not overwhelm the environment. Aesthetics, compactness, and integration with the interior furnishings is a consideration. This is first and foremost a living space. I have a dedicated room downstairs to tinker and geek out on the big system.

4) Wide bandwidth response is desirable but not mandatory. Superb midrange using less equipment is preferred over multi-amping, super-tweeters, large cabinets, digital lenses, atomic clocks, and cable risers (for example).

5) System: VAC Avatar SE integrated amp, Sony CDP-X3000 CD player as transport, modified Museatex Bitstream DAC, Mcintosh MR-74 tuner

6) Music is mostly symphonic, chamber and jazz.
