Why is it important that the driver needs a big cabinet?
...........Sensitivity, and good voice structure...........
I would prefer a 150 l cabinet over a 200 l. also JBL 2235 or the TAD 1601 are mentioned as excellent woofers to match a compression loaded horn, they go deep in a smaller cabinet. .....but they are 5dB less efficient in the midrange..............
In order words, what are the important factors when it comes to matching a woofer with a compression loaded horn. (crossing at 500Hz)
-------You want the voice output as high as possible, with the constraints of low cut-off and distortion. This means a cone around 80 grams with the lowest cutoff possible. Heavier you lose voice and sensitivity. note this is for 25 watt home systems- not PA----------
Also a lighter cone helps match dynamic range of HF horn.
About the 12inch JBL, are the dynamics of a 12inch good enough to mate well with a compression loaded horn?
Yes- crossed over 700Hz- 1200Hz it is hard to beat. It is also hard to find a louder speaker that has bass. The x-max is very low however. Also they are beautifully made. The older ones- you can unscrew the basket.
